Reduce Risk of Brain Damage

Studies conducted at the University of Eastern Finland and published in The Journal of the American Heart Association found that consuming omega-3 fatty acids could help prevent stroke and brain abnormalities.

The study was the first to combine dietary questionnaires and blood testing. The study included 3,660 participants; each subject underwent brain scans every five years to detect silent brain infarcts, or small lesions in that brain that could potentially cause loss of thinking skills, dementia, and stroke.

The team found those who had high levels of omega-3 in their blood had a 40 percent lower risk of having lesions on their brain, compared to the participants who did not consume as much omega-3.

According to WebMD, the following foods have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids:

·        Fish (halibut, salmon, tuna, oysters)
·        Fortified dairy (eggs, milk, yogurt)
·        Grains and nuts (crunchy oats, oatmeal, peanut butter, flaxseed)
·        Fresh produce (Brussels sprouts, parsley, spinach)

If you are interested in preventing loss of brain function and stroke, you might want to consider adding omega-3 to your daily diet.

Enjoy a healthy day.
