Is Ginger Good For The Brain?

SEATTLE —A recent study conducted in Seattle and published in the Indian Journal of Experimental Biology found that adding ginger to your diet could help protect your brain.
The study analyzed a group of participants who were told to add ginger to their diet. The researchers looked at the health benefits received from the addition to their diets.
The team found that the compound 6-shogaol, which is found in ginger helped significantly improve cognitive impairment. The compound helped prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter needed for memory and other brain functions.
It is noted that cooking with ginger adds great flavor, and can be added to several dishes including chicken, beef, or soup.
If you are interested in protecting your brain, you might want to consider adding ginger to your daily diet.

Prevent Information - HDL

GERMANY—A recent study conducted at the University Hospital of Bonn and presented in the current issue of Nature Immunology found that HDL “good cholesterol” helps fight off inflammation, and prevents clogging of the arteries.
High cholesterol levels cause dangerous deposits in the bloodstream, which lead to clogging/hardening of the arteries. As a consequence, this can lead to increased risk for stroke and heart attack. These bad cholesterol levels are known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL).
The study analyzed the different benefits that come from high-density lipoprotein (good cholesterol). They found good cholesterol helps prevent cardiovascular diseases. In addition, they found that HDL has anti-inflammatory benefits.
According to WebMD, inflammation causes several chronic diseases. Some include, arthritis, heart disease, and cancer.
It is noted that a few things that will help lower bad cholesterol, and raise good cholesterol include:
·       Eating fruit
·       Eating 5 servings of vegetables per day
·       Consuming fish, garlic and onions
If you are interested in fighting off inflammation and preventing heart disease, you might want to consider lowering your bad cholesterol levels and increasing your good cholesterol levels.

Walnuts May Prevent ALZHEIMER'S Disease

NEW YORK —A recent study conducted at New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities and published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that consuming walnuts could help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease affects more than 5 million Americans. By 2050, this number is expected to triple.
The study analyzed mice; the researchers noted that their brain and bodily functions are very similar to humans. For 10 months the mice were fed diets that consisted of 6 or 9 percent of walnuts each day, this is equivalent to 1-1.5 ounces for humans. There was also a control group of mice that did not consume any walnuts.
The team found that the mice that consumed walnuts had significant improvements in their learning, memory and motor coordination, compared to the group that did not consume any walnuts.
According to study leader, Dr. Abha Chauhan:
"These findings are very promising and help lay the groundwork for future human studies on walnuts and Alzheimer's disease - a disease for which there is no known cure. Our study adds to the growing body of research that demonstrates the protective effects of walnuts on cognitive functioning."
If you are interested in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, you might want to consider adding walnuts to your daily diet.

A Mediterranean Diet

A study was conducted in Canada recently and published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that consuming a Mediterranean diet could help prevent or reverse metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome is defined as having more than three risk factors for heart disease. These risk factors include obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and blood sugar levels. It is noted that nearly 34 percent of adults in the US have metabolic syndrome.
The study included a group of men and women between the ages of 55-80 who were at high risk of cardiovascular disease. All of the participants were part of the PREDIMED trial, which is an ongoing study that is analyzing the benefits of a Mediterranean diet. The participants were separated into three groups; one group followed a low-fat diet, the second group followed a Mediterranean diet with nuts and the third group consumed a Mediterranean diet with olive oil.
The team found that the two groups that followed a Mediterranean diet with nuts or olive oil saw a significant reduction in blood sugar levels and obesity. In addition, 30 percent of those who followed the Mediterranean diet did not meet the criteria for metabolic syndrome by the end of the study.
According to Mayoclinic, the following foods are considered part of a Mediterranean diet:
·         Fruits and vegetables
·         Whole grains
·         Olive oil
·         Legumes (nuts, beans)
